Gardening Tips: What Can You Plant In March?

If you haven't already, you should start your gardening in March. This month is ideal for planting warm season annuals, including begonias and alyssum. You should cover the plants with frost protection, especially if your home is in the Pacific Northwest. However, in most regions, you can still start to plant cool season crops in March. These tips will help you get started in gardening in March. These tips are not only helpful for your garden, but will save you time and energy.

The days become warmer and the sunlight increases, so you can begin germination. This can be done under glass or in a garden. Hanging baskets, bedding and veg can also be planted early. March is the best month for seeds to grow. They need to adjust to colder conditions and take longer to mature than other months. Because of this, it is important that you start gardening in March.

In March, plant flowers to attract bees and butterflies to your garden. These flowers can be grown in full or partial sun. Hummingbirds are also attracted to the vibrant blooms. You can find information about planting plants in March in books and magazines. You can also plant seeds in planters if it is not possible to wait for March to get started.

You don't have to wait until June to plant spring veggies. Instead, you can try planting Brussels sprouts in March. In the Pacific Northwest, you can plant Brussels sprouts in March as the growing conditions are ideal. Brussels sprouts need 35 weeks to mature. Sow them in March, preferably in lightly frosty conditions. They will get bigger if they are placed in the soil.

Before you begin planting your flowerbeds, prune shrubs and trees. You can trim and reshape dead branches. For new stems to grow, branches must be cut. March is a great time to deadhead. Crocuses, tulips and other flowers are all possible. The soil should be fertilized in addition to being pruned. Composted nutrients can help you prepare your garden to be ready for spring.

You can plant summer-blooming bulbs indoors by using moist soilless mixture. Store bulbs in containers under light. Then, transplant them outdoors once you see new growth. The bulbs can be moved to warmer temperatures once the danger of frost has passed. Remember to fertilize your soil and plants before frost. Don't forget about removing dead or dying plants, and replacing them with newer ones.

In March, you can plant warm season vegetables. Try planting spinach and spring onions if you're in the warmer zone. Likewise, you can plant lettuce, asparagus, potatoes, and melons indoors if the soil is sufficiently fertile and free of weeds. You can also start sowing cucumber and tomatoes seeds if your greenhouse is available. A few weeks later, you'll see the fruits of your labour.

FAQ

What vegetables are good to grow together?

Tomatoes and peppers can be grown together because they prefer similar soil conditions. They complement each other well since tomatoes need heat to ripen while peppers require cooler temperatures for optimal flavor. Start seeds indoors approximately six weeks prior to planting. Once the weather warms up, transplant the tomato and pepper plants outdoors.

How do you prepare the soil for a vegetable garden?

It is simple to prepare soil for your vegetable garden. First, you should remove all weeds around the area where you want to plant vegetables. Add organic matter such as leaves, composted manure or grass clippings, straw, wood chips, and then water. Let the plants grow by watering well.

Which is the best layout for a vegetable garden?

The best vegetable garden layout depends on where you live. If you live in the city, you should plant vegetables together for easy harvesting. For maximum yield, however, it is best to space your plants if you are in a rural area.

When should you plant flowers?

Planting flowers during springtime is best when temperatures are warm and the soil feels moist. If you live outside of a warm climate, it is best not to plant flowers until the first frost. The ideal temperature for indoor gardening is 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

Do I need any special equipment?

Not really. All you need are a trowel or shovel and a watering can.

When is it best to plant herbs?

The ideal time to plant herbs is springtime, when the soil temperature is 55°F. To get the best results, they should be planted in full sun. Plant basil indoors by placing seedlings into pots containing potting mix. Keep them out of direct sun until they sprout leaves. When the plants have started to grow, transfer them into bright indirect sunlight. After three weeks, you can transplant them to individual pots and water them every day.

How To

Use organic fertilizers in your garden

Organic fertilizers are made with natural substances like compost, manure, seaweed extract and blood meal. The term "organic" refers to using non-synthetic materials in their production. Synthetic fertilizers contain chemicals used in industrial processes. These fertilizers are commonly used in agriculture, as they can provide nutrients to plants quickly without the need for complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers present risks to both the environment- and human health. Synthetic fertilizers require large amounts of energy as well as water to be produced. Due to runoff, synthetic fertilizers can pollute both groundwater as well as surface waters. This pollution is detrimental to humans and wildlife alike.

There are many types of organic fertilizers.

* Manure - is made when livestock eat nitrogen (a plant food nutrient). It contains bacteria, enzymes, and other substances that break down the waste into simple compounds which can be easily absorbed by plants.

* Compost - A mixture of grass clippings from the lawn, decaying leaves, vegetable scraps, and animal dung. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and carbon. It is highly porous so it can retain moisture well and release nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion - a liquid product derived from fish oil. It can dissolve oils and fats, similar to soap. It contains phosphorous, nitrogen, and trace elements.

* Seaweed Extract - a concentrated solution of minerals extracted from kelp, red algae, brown algae, and green algae. It contains vitamins A and C, iron, and Iodine.

* Guano, excrement taken from amphibians, bats, reptiles and seabirds. It contains nitrogen, sulfur, chloride and carbon.

* Blood Meal, the remains from slaughtered animals. It is high in protein, making it suitable for feeding poultry and other livestock. It also contains trace minerals like phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen.

To make organic fertilizer, combine equal parts of manure, compost, and/or fish emulsion. Mix well. If you don’t own all three ingredients, one can be substituted for the other. If you only have the fish-emulsion you can substitute one with another.

Use a shovel to evenly distribute the fertilizer over the soil. The fertilizer should be about 1/4 cup per square foot. You'll need to add fertilizer every two weeks until new growth appears.
