How To

Organic fertilizers are available for garden use

Organic fertilizers include manure (compost), fish emulsions, seaweed extracts, blood meal, and compost. The term "organic" refers to using non-synthetic materials in their production. Synthetic fertilizers are chemicals that are used in industrial processes. These fertilizers are commonly used in agriculture, as they can provide nutrients to plants quickly without the need for complicated preparation. Synthetic fertilizers are dangerous for the environment as well as human health. They also require large amounts energy and water to make. Synthetic fertilizers also pollute surface and groundwater through runoff. This is a problem for wildlife and humans alike.

There are several types of organic fertilizers:

* Manure is created when livestock eat foods containing nitrogen (a nutrient for plants). It is made up of bacteria and enzymes, which break down the waste into simpler compounds that can be absorbed easily by plants.

* Compost - A mixture of grass clippings from the lawn, decaying leaves, vegetable scraps, and animal dung. It is high in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium as well as calcium, magnesium, sulfur. It's porous so it is able to retain moisture well, and slowly releases nutrients.

* Fish Emulsion - a liquid product derived from fish oil. It has the ability to dissolve oils, fats and is very similar to soap. It also contains trace elements, phosphorous and nitrogen.

* Seaweed extract - A concentrated solution of minerals from kelp and red algae. It contains vitamins A and C, iron, and Iodine.

* Guano, excrement taken from amphibians, bats, reptiles and seabirds. It contains carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous as well as potassium, sodium and magnesium.

* Blood Meal - the remains of slaughtered animals. It is rich in protein which is useful for feeding birds and other animals. It also has trace minerals such as phosphorous, potassium, nitrogen and other nutrients.

Mix equal amounts of compost, manure, and/or fish oil to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. If you don't have all three ingredients, you can substitute them one for another. For example, if you only have access to the fish emulsion, you can mix 1 part of fish emulsion with two parts of compost.

To apply the fertilizer, spread it evenly over the soil using a shovel or tiller. One quarter cup of the fertilizer should be spread per square foot. You will need more fertilizer to see signs and growth every two weeks.
