FAQ

When to plant herbs?

Spring should be when the soil temperature reaches 55 degrees F. For best results, plant them in full sunlight. Plant basil indoors by placing seedlings into pots containing potting mix. Keep them out of direct sun until they sprout leaves. After plants begin to grow, you can move them into indirect sunlight. After approximately three weeks, transplant them into individual containers. Continue to water them as needed.

How many hours of light does a plant need?

It depends on the type of plant. Some plants require 12 hours of direct sunshine per day. Others prefer 8 to 10 hours of indirect sun. Most vegetables require 10 hours direct sunlight in a 24-hour period.

Which vegetables are best to grow together?

The combination of tomatoes and peppers is great because they love the same temperatures and soil conditions. They can complement each other because tomatoes require heat to mature, and peppers require lower temperatures for their optimal flavor. If you want to try growing them together, start seeds indoors about six weeks before planting them. After the weather has warmed up, you can transplant the pepper plants and tomatoes outside.

Which seeds should you start indoors?

The best seed for starting indoors is a tomato seed. Tomatoes can be grown quickly and they bear fruit all year. You should be cautious when putting tomatoes into pots. Planting too soon can cause soil to dry out and root rot. Also, be aware of diseases such as bacterial wilt, which can kill plants quickly.

When to plant flowers

Planting flowers is best done during springtime when temperatures are milder and the soil is moist. Planting flowers should be done after the first frost if you live in a cold climate. The ideal temperature for indoor gardening is 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

Can I grow vegetables indoors

Yes, it is possible for vegetables to be grown inside during winter months. You will need a greenhouse or grow lighting. Before buying a greenhouse, check with your local laws.

How To

Organic fertilizers for your garden

Organic fertilizers can be made from natural substances, such as compost, manure and seaweed extract. Organic fertilizers are made from non-synthetic materials. Synthetic fertilizers contain chemicals used in industrial processes. They are widely used in agriculture because they provide nutrients to plants quickly and efficiently without requiring laborious preparation methods. However, synthetic fertilizers pose risks to human health and the environment. Synthetic fertilizers require large amounts of energy as well as water to be produced. Due to runoff, synthetic fertilizers can pollute both groundwater as well as surface waters. This pollution is harmful to wildlife and humans.

There are several kinds of organic fertilisers:

* Manure - is made when livestock eat nitrogen (a plant food nutrient). It has bacteria and enzymes that help to break down the waste, resulting in simple compounds that are easy for plants to absorb.

* Compost - a mixture of decaying leaves, grass clippings, vegetable scraps, and animal manure. It is rich in carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, magnesium and sulfur. It is highly porous, so it holds moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion – A liquid product derived from fish oils. It can dissolve oils and fats, similar to soap. It contains trace elements and phosphorous as well as nitrogen and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Extract is a concentrated solution that contains minerals extracted from red algae, brown algae and green algae. It contains vitamins A and C, iron, and Iodine.

* Guano is the excrement of seabirds and bats. It contains nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfate, chloride, and carbon.

* Blood Meal is the meat and bones of animals that have been slaughtered. It is rich in protein which is useful for feeding birds and other animals. It also contains phosphorus, potassium, nitrogen, and trace minerals.

For organic fertilizer mix equal amounts of manure, compost and/or fishemulsion. Mix well. If you don’t have access, you can mix one ingredient with the other. For example, you could mix 1 part of the fishemulsion with 2 parts of compost if only you have access to fish emulsion.

Spread the fertilizer evenly on the soil with a shovel, or tiller. You should spread about one quarter cup of the fertilizer per square foot. To see new growth, you will need to apply more fertilizer every 2 weeks.
