FAQ

Does my backyard have enough space for a garden?

You might be wondering if you have enough space to grow a vegetable garden if you don't have one. The answer is yes. A vegetable garden doesn't take up much space at all. It takes just a little planning. For instance, raised beds could be constructed only 6 inches high. You could also use containers to replace raised beds. Either way, you'll still get plenty of produce.

Which seeds should I start indoors and which ones should I avoid?

A tomato seed makes the best seed for indoor planting. Tomatoes produce year-round fruit and are easy to plant. When growing tomatoes in pots, be careful when transplanting them into the ground. If you plant too early, the soil may dry out, which could cause the roots to rot. Also, be aware of diseases such as bacterial wilt, which can kill plants quickly.

How big is a vegetable gardening space?

It is best to remember that 1/2 pound of seed will be required for every square foot. Therefore, 100 pounds of seeds is required for a surface of 10 feet x 10 feet (3 m x 3 m).

How To

Organic fertilizers are available for garden use

Organic fertilizers include manure (compost), fish emulsions, seaweed extracts, blood meal, and compost. Non-synthetic materials are used in the production of organic fertilizers. Synthetic fertilizers are chemical compounds used in industrial processes. They are widely used in agriculture because they provide nutrients to plants quickly and efficiently without requiring laborious preparation methods. However, synthetic fertilizers pose risks to human health and the environment. To produce, synthetic fertilizers require a lot of energy and water. Many synthetic fertilizers are also harmful to groundwater and water surface because of runoff. This pollution is both harmful to wildlife as well as humans.

There are many types of organic fertilizers.

* Manure is a product of livestock eating nitrogen-rich food (a plant nutrient). It is made up of bacteria and enzymes, which break down the waste into simpler compounds that can be absorbed easily by plants.

* Compost is a mixture of vegetable scraps and grass clippings, animal manure, and decaying leaves. It is high in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium as well as calcium, magnesium, sulfur. It's porous so it is able to retain moisture well, and slowly releases nutrients.

* Fish Emulsion – A liquid product derived from fish oils. It dissolves fats and oils in a similar way to soap. It also contains trace elements, phosphorous and nitrogen.

* Seaweed extract - A concentrated solution of minerals from kelp and red algae. It provides a source of vitamins A and C, iodine, and iron.

* Guano - Excreta from amphibians and seabirds. It contains nitrogen, sulfur, chloride and carbon.

* Blood Meal, the remains from slaughtered animals. It is high in protein, making it suitable for feeding poultry and other livestock. It also contains phosphorus, potassium, nitrogen, and trace minerals.

Combine equal parts of compost, manure and/or fish-emulsion to make organic fertilizer. Mix thoroughly. You can substitute one with another if you don't have access to all three ingredients. For example, you could mix 1 part of the fishemulsion with 2 parts of compost if only you have access to fish emulsion.

Apply the fertilizer by spreading it evenly using a tiller or shovel. About a quarter of a cup of the fertilizer is needed per square foot. To see new growth, you will need to apply more fertilizer every 2 weeks.
