FAQ

What is the maximum time I can keep an indoor plant alive for?

Indoor plants can survive for several years. To ensure new growth, it's important that you repot indoor plants every few years. Repotting is easy; simply remove the old soil and add fresh compost.

When to plant herbs

The ideal time to plant herbs is springtime, when the soil temperature is 55°F. To get the best results, they should be planted in full sun. For basil indoors, plant seedlings in potting mix-filled pots and let them grow until they produce leaves. After plants begin to grow, you can move them into indirect sunlight. After approximately three weeks, transplant them into individual containers. Continue to water them as needed.

Which seeds should you start indoors?

A tomato seed is the best for indoor gardening. Tomatoes produce year-round fruit and are easy to plant. Plant tomatoes in pots and be careful about putting them in the ground. Planting tomatoes too early can lead to soil drying out which could lead roots to rot. You should also be aware of diseases like bacterial Wilt that can quickly kill your plants.

Which type of lighting best suits indoor plant growth?

Florescent lights work well for growing plants indoors because they emit less heat than incandescent bulbs. They can also provide steady lighting without flickering and dimming. Both regular and compact fluorescent fluorescent bulbs are available. CFLs require 75% less energy than traditional bulbs.

How many hours does a plant need to get light?

It depends on which plant it is. Some plants require 12 hours of direct sunshine per day. Others prefer 8 hours in indirect sunlight. Most vegetables need at least 10 hours of direct sunlight per 24-hour time period.

What's the difference between aquaponic and hydroponic gardening?

Hydroponic gardening uses nutrient-rich water instead of soil to feed plants. Aquaponics uses fish tanks to grow plants. You can have your farm right at your house!

Do I need special equipment to grow vegetables in my garden?

Not really. A shovel, trowel and watering container are all you need.

How To

Organic fertilizers are available for garden use

Organic fertilizers can be made from natural substances, such as compost, manure and seaweed extract. Non-synthetic materials are used in the production of organic fertilizers. Synthetic fertilizers contain chemicals used in industrial processes. These fertilizers are commonly used in agriculture, as they can provide nutrients to plants quickly without the need for complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers present risks to both the environment- and human health. They also require large amounts energy and water to make. Runoff from synthetic fertilizers can also pollute groundwater and surface water. This pollution is harmful to wildlife and humans.

There are many organic fertilizers available:

* Manure is a product of livestock eating nitrogen-rich food (a plant nutrient). It has bacteria and enzymes that help to break down the waste, resulting in simple compounds that are easy for plants to absorb.

* Compost is a mixture from vegetable scraps, grass clippings and decaying leaves. It is rich in carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, magnesium and sulfur. It is highly porous, so it holds moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion - a liquid product derived from fish oil. It dissolves fats and oils in a similar way to soap. It contains phosphorous, nitrogen, and trace elements.

* Seaweed extract - A concentrated solution of minerals from kelp and red algae. It provides a source of vitamins A and C, iodine, and iron.

* Guano is excrement from amphibians, seabirds, bats and reptiles. It contains nitrogen and phosphorous, potassium as well sulfate, salt, chloride, carbon, sodium, magnesium and other minerals.

* Blood Meal: The remains of animal carcasses. It is rich in protein which is useful for feeding birds and other animals. It also contains trace minerals like phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen.

To make organic fertilizer, combine equal parts of manure, compost, and/or fish emulsion. Mix thoroughly. If you don't have all three ingredients, you can substitute them one for another. For example, you could mix 1 part of the fishemulsion with 2 parts of compost if only you have access to fish emulsion.

Apply the fertilizer to the soil by using a shovel and tiller. The fertilizer should be about 1/4 cup per square foot. You will need to add more fertilizer every two weeks until you see signs of new growth.
