How To

Organic fertilizers to be used in the garden

Organic fertilizers are made with natural substances like compost, manure, seaweed extract and blood meal. The term "organic" means that they are produced using non-synthetic material. Synthetic fertilizers contain chemicals used in industrial processes. Because they are quick and efficient, synthetic fertilizers are popular in agriculture. They don't require laborious preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose a risk to the environment and our health. Synthetic fertilizers require large amounts of energy as well as water to be produced. Many synthetic fertilizers are also harmful to groundwater and water surface because of runoff. This pollution is harmful to wildlife and humans.

There are many organic fertilizers available:

* Manure is a product of livestock eating nitrogen-rich food (a plant nutrient). It has bacteria and enzymes that help to break down the waste, resulting in simple compounds that are easy for plants to absorb.

* Compost - a mixture of decaying leaves, grass clippings, vegetable scraps, and animal manure. It is rich with nitrogen, phosphorus. potassium, calcium. magnesium. sulfur. iron. copper. manganese. molybdenum. chlorine. and carbon. It is extremely porous and holds water well.

* Fish Emulsion is a liquid product made from fish oil. It can dissolve oils and fats, similar to soap. It has trace elements such as phosphorous, nitrogen and nitrate.

* Seaweed Extract is a concentrated solution that contains minerals extracted from red algae, brown algae and green algae. It's a great source of vitamins A and C as well as iodine and iron.

* Guano is excrement from amphibians, seabirds, bats and reptiles. It contains nitrogen and phosphorous, potassium as well sulfate, salt, chloride, carbon, sodium, magnesium and other minerals.

* Blood Meal - the remains of slaughtered animals. It's rich in protein and can be used to feed poultry and other animals. It also contains trace mineral, phosphorus as well as potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus.

Make organic fertilizer by combining equal parts manure, fish emulsion, and compost. Mix thoroughly. You can substitute one with another if you don't have access to all three ingredients. If you only have the fish-emulsion you can substitute one with another.

Spread the fertilizer evenly on the soil with a shovel, or tiller. About a quarter of a cup of the fertilizer is needed per square foot. You'll need to add fertilizer every two weeks until new growth appears.
