How To

Organic fertilizers for garden use

Organic fertilizers are made of natural substances like manure, compost and fish emulsion. The term organic refers to the use of non-synthetic materials for their production. Synthetic fertilizers are chemicals that are used in industrial processes. These fertilizers are commonly used in agriculture, as they can provide nutrients to plants quickly without the need for complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose a risk to the environment and our health. They also require large amounts energy and water to make. Moreover, many synthetic fertilizers pollute groundwater and surface waters due to runoff. This is a problem for wildlife and humans alike.

There are many organic fertilizers available:

* Manure is a product of livestock eating nitrogen-rich food (a plant nutrient). It contains bacteria and enzymes that break down the waste into simple compounds that plants can absorb easily.

* Compost is a mixture from vegetable scraps, grass clippings and decaying leaves. It is rich for nitrogen, carbon, potassium and magnesium. It is highly porous so it can retain moisture well and release nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion: A liquid product derived primarily from fish oil. It is similar to soap in its ability to dissolve oils and fats. It also contains trace elements, phosphorous and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Oil - A concentrated mixture of minerals taken from kelp, red and brown algae, as well as green algae. It's a great source of vitamins A and C as well as iodine and iron.

* Guano is excrement from amphibians, seabirds, bats and reptiles. It contains nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfate, chloride, and carbon.

* Blood Meal: The remains of animal carcasses. It's rich in protein and can be used to feed poultry and other animals. It also contains trace mineral, phosphorus as well as potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus.

Combine equal parts of compost, manure and/or fish-emulsion to make organic fertilizer. Mix thoroughly. If you don’t have access, you can mix one ingredient with the other. If you only have the fish-emulsion you can substitute one with another.

To apply the fertilizer, spread it evenly over the soil using a shovel or tiller. Spread about a quarter cup of the mixture per square foot of growing space. To see new growth, you will need to apply more fertilizer every 2 weeks.
