FAQ

Does my backyard have enough space for a garden?

If you don't already have a vegetable garden, you might wonder whether you'll have enough room for one. The answer to that question is yes. A vegetable garden doesn't take up much space at all. It just takes some planning. For instance, raised beds could be constructed only 6 inches high. Or, you could use containers instead of raised beds. Either way, you'll still get plenty of produce.

What's the difference?

Hydroponic gardening makes use of nutrient-rich water rather than soil to grow plants. Aquaponics uses fish tanks to grow plants. It's almost like having a farm right at home.

How often do I need to water my indoor plants?

Indoor plants need watering every two days. Watering helps maintain humidity levels inside the house. Humidity is crucial for healthy plants.

What is a plant calendar?

A planting calendar lists the plants that should all be planted at various times during the year. The goal is to maximize growth while minimizing stress for the plant. For example, early spring crops such as peas, spinach, and lettuce should be sown after the last frost date. Cucumbers, squash, and spring beans are later crops. Fall crops include carrots and cabbage, broccoli, cauliflowers, kale, potatoes, and others.

Are pots possible to grow fruit trees?

Yes! If space is limited, you can grow fruit trees in pots. Your pot should have drainage holes to ensure that the tree doesn't get rotted by excess moisture. Also ensure that the pot is large enough to accommodate the root ball. This will prevent the tree from being stressed.

When to plant flowers

Planting flowers in spring is easier when the temperature is lower and the soil remains moist. If you live somewhere cold, planting flowers should be done before the first frost. The ideal temperature for growing plants indoors is around 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

How To

Organic fertilizers for garden use

Organic fertilizers are made of natural substances like manure, compost and fish emulsion. The term "organic" means that they are produced using non-synthetic material. Synthetic fertilizers include chemicals used in industrial processes. These fertilizers are commonly used in agriculture, as they can provide nutrients to plants quickly without the need for complicated preparation. Synthetic fertilizers are dangerous for the environment as well as human health. Synthetic fertilizers require large amounts of energy as well as water to be produced. Many synthetic fertilizers are also harmful to groundwater and water surface because of runoff. This pollution is both harmful to wildlife as well as humans.

There are many types of organic fertilizers.

* Manure - is made when livestock eat nitrogen (a plant food nutrient). It contains bacteria and enzymes that break down the waste into simple compounds that plants can absorb easily.

* Compost - A mixture of grass clippings from the lawn, decaying leaves, vegetable scraps, and animal dung. It is rich with nitrogen, phosphorus. potassium, calcium. magnesium. sulfur. iron. copper. manganese. molybdenum. chlorine. and carbon. It is porous so it retains moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion is a liquid product made from fish oil. It has the ability to dissolve oils, fats and is very similar to soap. It contains trace elements and phosphorous as well as nitrogen and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Extract is a concentrated solution that contains minerals extracted from red algae, brown algae and green algae. It contains vitamins A and C, iron, and Iodine.

* Guano, excrement taken from amphibians, bats, reptiles and seabirds. It contains nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfate, chloride, and carbon.

* Blood Meal - the remains of slaughtered animals. It's rich in protein and can be used to feed poultry and other animals. It also has trace minerals such as phosphorous, potassium, nitrogen and other nutrients.

Mix equal amounts of compost, manure, and/or fish oil to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. If you don’t own all three ingredients, one can be substituted for the other. If you have only access to the fish oil emulsion, then you can combine 1 part fish emulsion and 2 parts compost.

Spread the fertilizer evenly on the soil with a shovel, or tiller. You should spread about one quarter cup of the fertilizer per square foot. To see new growth, you will need to apply more fertilizer every 2 weeks.
