How To

Organic fertilizers for garden use

Organic fertilizers include manure (compost), fish emulsions, seaweed extracts, blood meal, and compost. The term "organic" means that they are produced using non-synthetic material. Synthetic fertilizers contain chemicals used in industrial processes. These fertilizers are commonly used in agriculture, as they can provide nutrients to plants quickly without the need for complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose a risk to the environment and our health. Synthetic fertilizers require large amounts of energy as well as water to be produced. Runoff from synthetic fertilizers can also pollute groundwater and surface water. This pollution is harmful to wildlife and humans.

There are many kinds of organic fertilizers.

* Manure - is made when livestock eat nitrogen (a plant food nutrient). It is made up of bacteria and enzymes, which break down the waste into simpler compounds that can be absorbed easily by plants.

* Compost is a mixture from vegetable scraps, grass clippings and decaying leaves. It is high in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium as well as calcium, magnesium, sulfur. It is highly porous, so it holds moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion- A liquid product that is made from fish oil. It has the ability to dissolve oils, fats and is very similar to soap. It contains trace elements and phosphorous as well as nitrogen and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Extract - a concentrated solution of minerals extracted from kelp, red algae, brown algae, and green algae. It is rich in vitamins A, C and iodine as well as iron.

* Guano - excrement from seabirds, bats, reptiles, and amphibians. It contains carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous as well as potassium, sodium and magnesium.

* Blood Meal: The remains of animal carcasses. It is rich in protein which is useful for feeding birds and other animals. It also contains phosphorus, potassium, nitrogen, and trace minerals.

Combine equal parts of compost, manure and/or fish-emulsion to make organic fertilizer. Mix thoroughly. If you don’t have access, you can mix one ingredient with the other. For example, you could mix 1 part of the fishemulsion with 2 parts of compost if only you have access to fish emulsion.

Spread the fertilizer evenly on the soil with a shovel, or tiller. Spread about a quarter cup of the mixture per square foot of growing space. You will need more fertilizer to see signs and growth every two weeks.
