How To

How to grow basil

Basil is one the most versatile herbs that you can use in your home. It's great for flavoring dishes, adding flavor to soups, sauces, salads, pasta, and even desserts. These are some great tips to grow basil indoors.

  1. Be careful about where you place it. Basil is an annual plant and will only live one season if it's not in the right place. It likes full sun but can tolerate partial shade. It is best to grow it outdoors in an area with good air circulation.
  2. Plant the seeds. Basil seeds should be planted two weeks before the last frost date. Place the seeds 1/2 inch deep into small pots containing potting mix. Wrap the pots with clear plastic and place them in a sunny area. Germination usually takes about ten days. Once germinated, move the pots into a shaded area where temperatures stay around 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. When the seedlings reach maturity, you can transplant them. Transplant the seedlings into larger pots by removing the plastic wrap. Each container should be filled with potting mix. To help remove excess moisture, add gravel or pebbles. As necessary, you can add more potting material. Place the containers in a sunny window or in indirect light. Keep the plants hydrated to avoid wilting.
  4. Apply a thick layer mulch to the top of your plants after the danger of frost has passed. This will protect them from cold weather and reduce water loss.
  5. Regularly water the plants. Basil needs to be hydrated regularly to ensure its survival. To check how much water your plants need, you can use a rain gauge. Use a timer to automatically turn off irrigation during dry spells.
  6. Pick your basil when it reaches its prime. You can encourage bushier growth by picking the leaves more often.
  7. Use paper towels or screens to dry the leaves. The leaves can be stored in glass jars or bags in their refrigerator.
